Back to IOM testing

So I have 2 rigs that I want to test out. The first is a medium set of moulded sails on a mast with 16mm prebend and the second is the deepest moulded sails with zero prebend. (The BG sails from last year sit so well on this rig). These will be set up on my current Proteus and then the latest version of the Proteus which have more fullness in the bow to reduce the nosediving without hopefully impacting the impressive upwind performance. Of course it will not be until we get back to Datchet in a breeze when we can see how the boats perform in waves.

I tried testing at Frensham today and despite the forecast, the wind was too light to make sense of anything. So with the shrouds running up the front of the mast and 16mm of prebend one creates a very solid set up even with the shoruds set slack. The shrouds running up the front of the mast create an effect similar to prebend so with 16mm prebend as well the overall effect is too much for light weather and may produce too stiff a rig in a breeze although the jib tension is massive.

My next step is to try the same rig with 7mm prebend and I have to say I like what I see when the boat is static in the office, so much so I now want to try a mast with zero prebend because I believe that will work too and what a benefit that would be to club sailors. Just buy a straight mast and rig it. One removes one of the 21 variables in rigging an IOM

The next step is to test the 7mm prebend with max depth sailboat RC max draft sails against Craig on Saturday and Sunday.

Of course all the above is theory. Whether the new setup is fast for UK waters is another matter
