Clive Hand memorial trophy. A story of a missed half hitch and some details on Joysway's new one meter

I attended the Clive Hand Memorial trophy at Lincoln Radio sailing club which I have to say was so well worth attending in spite of a long drive. Good weather, good wind and a great fleet of 30 plus boats.

The full report will appear on Lincoln's web site.

Race one started well but I was a little confused when I brought the boat ashore as the mainsheet appeared to have lengthed. Being a bear of little brain I thought it may be something to do with the internal sheeting of the boat. The same thing happened in race 2 and as the wind increased the problem got worse until I could not escape B fleet. Upwind the mainsail was flapping. After the failure to get out of B fleet I got into the detail and discovered that when I had been adjusting the sheets the day before with the new transmitter, I forgot to tie a second locking half hitch on the sheet hook. Schoolboy error and no more said.

Once that was sorted I lost a protest on a start line in the next race and then had a series of 4ths in a very shifty wind and ended 5th overall so not a bad result given the start to the day. On the positive side, it was a great shakedown sail for the new transmitter and B rig.

The boat performed well and I enjoy sailing it. It proved to be quite quick downwind and level with the Venti's and Britpops upwind. It was the first time with the B rig and apart from the shrouds bedding in and loosening a fraction all was good and the boat was dry inside.

The Joysway's one meter

One thing of note from the day was the performance of the new development version of Joysways One meter, MINT. John Tushingham sailed it beautifully until a few minor gremlins hit. The construction is blow moulded ABS. The boat looks really nice with a lovely finish, well thought through and strong. I attach a few pictures showing the detail of the boat. It proved to be quick. I feel Joysway's are developing a very competitive package and their new sails look good.

Starting to look a bit mor like the scow bow'd boats that are now prevalent in the short handed offshore race boats these days, It will certainly help reduce nose diving. I wonder if rules allow someone to go all they way with a scow bow.
