More work on tell tales

I have tested, spinnaker cloth, wool, strips of silver fabric used as warm blankets after marathons and finally concluded that there is nothing better than a piece of wool. I wanted to prove Craig Richards wrong but yet again I have to agree with him. To quote someone at the last DF TT, "Hse is annoyingly good".

On a recent visit to a garden centre, I found the perfect black wool, three strands but very light, ideal for tell tales. With a quick spray of Fly Float the woolen tell tales are not affected too bacly from rain and definitely do not stick like the silver film of spinnaker cloth strips. With 4 boats it is amazing how many pieces of wool one uses. I use 8cm lengths for the DF's and 9cm for the IOM and M. Three down the jib luff (only 2 on the DF 65) and two on the main 1/3 and 2/3 up the centre. That way I can evaluate if I have the right amount of twist on the sail when tuning up.

I know there are people who sail without them but they can a fantastic help to make sure your trim is perfect.
