Given the interest in the Proteus design I thought it might help if I shared some of the learnings from two boat tuning with Craig Richards the designer. I hope it proves to be useful.
In this video, I briefly cover the build, the components, the rig, and general setup of the boat for racing. I love the design but am also two timing Craig working up a VISS. At the start of the project he did say you have to keep your options open. Part of the reason for buying a VISS was to get the best light to medium weather platform to match against the Proteus so we can ensure Craig has the best all round platform for the worlds next year.
As you can see from the video, I have my Proteus ready for further winter tuning.
One thing I forgot to mention on the video, is when sailing upwind, I set the end points up so the main boom is 20mm off the mainsheet eye on the deck and set the jib 10mm further out thsn normal. I then use mixing to bring the boom into the centre if needed and can vary the sheeting according. I found that this give the best setup to get off start lines and can quickly sheet in if you have a pincher to leeward. I covered this in previous blogs and the refined techniques on the web site.
Enjoy. Let me know if this helps?
