Plans and preparation

So this weekend marks the turning point for worlds qualification. 3 ranking events down, 4 to go. It will be an interesting weekend's racing with at least 5 ex world champions in the mix and at least 2 heats. Given the right wind, Datchet will put on a spectacular event with a BBQ on Saturday night. My thanks in advance to the key organisers, Phil Holiday, Hugh McAdoo for days of effort ensuring all is good with marks and facilities. Also our outstanding chefs Graham and Elaine Hetem who will provide the BBQ and from previous experience of their cooking, the food will be excellent.

So how do I stand at the moment in the ranking? I have room for improvement as neither Scarborough nor the nationals went well trying for me to get to grips with the Proteus and the rig. In summary I need 4 good results which given the competition, it will be an interesting challenge.

How do I feel? Mildly confident. I have a dry boat which I know to be quick and everything looks in perfect working order despite the salt water washing in Eastbourne. All the training over the winter is helping but there are always the unknowns and gremlins that could strike at any moment.

Have I improved enough to get off the start line and sail fast in a lane to the first tack? Will my judgement be OK in tight manoeuvring and starboard crosses? Will I pick the right wind shifts? Preparation is everything and I do not believe I could have done more. The practice schedule ensured I covered all the sailing bases and lots of time on the water, although I would have liked more bigger fleet sailing.

Only time will tell what happens and whether I am ready to step up. Next week, will I be laughing or crying as my dad used to say? Whatever happens, there will be other opportunities as I continue my development pathway?

Onwards and upwards.
